Bones May be Vatican Bank Employee’s Daughter Missing Since 1983

Human bones found during the renovation of a Vatican building have been linked to a teenage girl, Emanuela Orlando, who disappeared in 1983.

Bone fragments were found around 7km (4miles) north of Vatican City at its embassy to Italy in the upmarket residential neighbourhood of Parioli, a Vatican statement said.

They were discovered during restructuring work on an annex to the Holy See's imposing embassy compound near Rome's famous Villa Borghese museum.

Rome's chief prosecutor was called in and forensic investigators are working to determine whether they are male or female, their age and date of death.

Yet Another Unusual Dismissal in Vatican Bank

(Rome) The number three of the Vatican Bank IOR was also dismissed.

Giulio Mattietti

Deputy Vatican spokesman Paloma Garcia Ovejero confirmed to the press agency ANSA that the service of Giulio Mattietti, Deputy Director-General of the Vatican Bank IOR, ended on 27 November.

Mattietti was appointed to the position in November 2015 by the current Director-General, Gian Franco Mammì. The reasons for the end of the collaboration "are currently unknown," says ANSA.

The press agency Notimex became clearer today. She says that Mattietti was "unexpectedly dismissed, even if the Holy See does not give any further explanation."

"Last Monday, November 27, had the right hand man of Director-General left his office and was escorted to the door by some of his colleagues."

Last June, the Holy See's Advisor-General, Libero Milone, was removed from the Vatican City under unusual circumstances. He was accused of spying on other people in the Vatican. It's an accusation that was rejected by Milone.

The series of dismissals and surprise resignations began in May 2012, when the then president of the bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was virtually knocked out by the other board members.

He was followed by Ernst von Freyberg, who threw in the towel after only a short time.

Four Months of Prison for Vatican Bank Executives Accused of Money Laundering

Director Cipriani and his deputy found guilty of money laundering.

Rome (kath.net/KAT)  Two former executives of the Vatican Bank IOR have been condemned by an Italian court for violation of anti-money laundering regulations. A Roman court imposed on the former director Paolo Cipriani and his deputy Massimo Tulli imprisonment of four months and ten days, as Italian media reported on Friday. Thus, for the first time, important employees of the IOR were convicted of violating anti-money laundering laws. The defenders announced their appeal.

Cipriani and his deputy were sentenced for three transfers of 48,000, 100,000 and 120,000 euros, which were without the proper communication. The defenders stressed that both were released for two much higher transfers of a total of 23 million euros in 2010, that was not held against them. The sum was to have been transferred under dubious circumstances from a branch of the Italian bank Credito Artigiano to the Banca del Fucino and the Frankfurt branch of JP Morgan. The prosecutor had frozen the money in June 2011.

Cipriani and his deputy had resigned from their offices in July 2013. The Vatican said at the time that this move was in the interests of the financial institution. As director, Cipriani headed the IOR's daily business.

Allegations of Corruption in Francis' Papacy of Mercy

Edit: considering all of the deceit and humbug of the Synod, how could there be anything but corruption?
Also, the corruption at Vatican bank had already been largely cleared up under Ettore Tedesci, who's been recently exhonerated, by the way.
How could a papacy which actively honors the largest of pornography distributors in Germany, and people like Marx, who assigned a sexual predator to parish work, be anything but corrupt?

By NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican is bracing for more allegations of financial wrongdoing and mismanagement with the publication next week of two books that underscore the challenges Pope Francis is facing to reform the Holy See.
Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi's "Merchants in the Temple" follows his blockbuster 2012 book, "His Holiness," based on confidential papal correspondence detailing corruption and political intrigue in the Vatican. The so-called Vatileaks scandal that ensued resulted in the conviction of Pope Benedict XVI's butler for leaking the documents, and some say, to Benedict's historic resignation.
Italian journalist Emiliano Fittipaldi is releasing "Avarice: Documents Revealing Wealth, Scandals and Secrets of Francis' Church." Fittipaldi writes for L'Espresso newsweekly, which has published some of the most damaging leaks of Francis' papacy, including most recently the letter by 13 cardinals warning Francis about his family synod.

Vatican Bank: Ernst von Freyberg’s Parting Statements on Resignation

(Vatican) In the long and detailed farewell statement by the former President of the Vatican Bank IOR, Ernst von Freyberg, which was released on July 8 in advance of the expected change in leadership at the bank top, "not a few curiosities” were found, said the Vatican expert Sandro Magister.
The most striking thing is the "meager net profit" in the annual balance sheet of 2013.  Only  2.9 million euro instead of the 86.6 million last year.  As a reason for the slump, there are among others the decline of the gold reserves of the IOR (minus 11.5 million euros) and  the poor performance of investment funds (minus 28.5 million). Ernst von Freyberg had also hinted what appear to be “favors” that the Vatican Bank has yet to answer for.

8.3 million for Consulting Firm Promontory

But then there are the costs for the staff of Promontory, the international financial consulting firm, which was established to review the banking institution, which could increase the expenditure side by 33 percent. In other words, the Promontory consultancy cost the Vatican Bank 8.3 million euros. The new Director General Roberto Marranci also comes from Promontory (November 2013). The eldest son of the new IOR-President, Jean-Baptiste Douville de Franssu works for Promontory. One could almost say Promontory advised and has “taken over” the Vatican bank.

Loan for Bishop of the Community of Sant'Egidio

In the statement by Ernst von Freyberg one also reads that 3.2 million euros were paid in  “financial assistance to the Diocese of Terni". The payment is related to the financial collapse of the Umbrian diocese where Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia was as bishop there. Paglia, a leading representative of the Community of Sant'Egidio, is now President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. The diocese had to be managed by a commissar and the Vatican Bank had to take over half of the more than 20 million euro debt.

Given Away 15 Million Shares to Film Production Company

"When would this not be enough," said Magister, appearing under the loss of the Vatican Bank and the free "transfer" of shares worth 15.1 million euros to a "Foundation of the Holy See". It is a stake of 17 percent of the film production company Lux Vide by Ettore Bernabei and Sons who were  acquired by the IOR at a high price, but was then given away to a unspecified "foundation" of the Holy See.  According to media reports, that are not denied, this is the foundation Scienza e Fede (science and faith), which is connected to the Papal Cultural Council, which is headed by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi.
In winter 2011/2012, the then President of the Vatican Bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, rejected the application for financial assistance from the Lux Vide. After his opaque resignation in autumn 2012, however, the application was approved.

The Minus of the Holy See

While the Vatican Bank is almost in the black, the Holy See ran in 2013 into the red. Although the Vatican Bank contributed 150 million euros to the Holy See, the first year of the pontificate of Pope Francis ended with a loss of 24.5 million euros.
This included the Peter's Pence for the 2013 of $ 78 million in donations for the Holy See, while  last year with Pope Benedict XVI. it was only 65.9 million. The best result has been achieved in 2009 with 82.5 million. This was according to a statement by Archbishop Angelo Becciu, substitute of the Cardinal Secretary of State on 28 June in an interview for the newspaper Avvenire.

Douville is The New President of Vatican Bank

(Vatican) The French management consultant Jean-Baptiste Douville de Franssu will be the new President of Vatican Bank IOR. De Franssu may be announced in the next few days as the successor of Ernst von Freyberg. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had already reported the name of the new IOR President on 2 July. Last Saturday the first meeting between the Frenchman and Pope Francis took place. It is rumored that Von Freyberg had "communication problems" with Pope Francis. Even so "differences" with the controversial Household Prelate, Gian Battista Ricca, induced the German business executive to finally return to Germany. While Ricca, despite his troubled past, has earned the trust of Pope Francis, this did not suffice for von Freyberg, to maintain direct contact with the Pope.

The new Chief of Vatican Bank, Douville de Franssu, has been incipiently active in international business consulting. He is additionally a partner in the American Advisor Firm, Guardiola. Both undertakings do not belong to the first class of consultants internationally. This could, as long as Pope Francis is in office, broaden their influence in the Vatican. McKinsey and others have made "proposals" for Curial reform and their words have influence.

The Influence of Msgr. Vallejo-Balda on Pope Francis

De Franssu is supposed to have earned the trust of the new Economics Advisor of the Holy See, George Cardinal Pell. His appointment seems to belong more to the influence of Msgr. Lucio Vallejo-Balda. Vallejo-Balda is the number two in the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Vatican. The industrious Monsignore enjoys the trust of Pope Francis despite some curious events.

The eldest son of the upcoming Vatican Bank President, Louis Victor Douville de Franssu, had worked till now for Promontory Financial Group. The Financial Consultant has been active on the Vatican since 2013. Previously, Louis Victor de Franssu was employed with Goldman Sachs. From Promontory comes also the new General Director of the Vatican Bank, Rolando Marranci, since 2013.

The practicing Catholic, Jean-Baptiste Douville de Franssu, is married to the Belgian native Hélène de Gerlache de Gomery and the father of four children.

Is the Vatican Bank President to Resign?

(Vatikan) The President of the Vatican Bank, Ernst von Freyberg, will resign next week according to a Vatican source.  The resignation comes in connection with reforms introduced by Pope Francis last year. It is unclear of the resignation is voluntary or not. According to the Vatican source the Vatican expert is leaving the post by his own wish.

In the coming week the bank's yearly report will be published. In connection with this publication his resignation will be expected. Ernst von Freyberg, since 26 February 2013, has been President of the Oversight Committee of Vatican Bank, is resolved to return with his family to Germany.
The Vatican Bank has been increasingly in the midst of actual scandals, and more and more alleged scandals and above all by sensational novel writers.

A few months previously, Pope Francis has revised the entire business, finance and administrative areas of the Vatican. The reform has not been completely enacted. Three months ago Cardinal Pell was appointed to the newly created Economic Secretariat. In this "super ministry" of the Holy See all of the financial and economic aspects are included.

Ernst von Freyberg was names by Pope Benedict XVI. in the last days of his Pontificate on February 15th and thus aroused wild speculation upon his resignation a few days later. In the second half of the year 2013, he was also in a leadership role as the IOR General Secretariat. His predecessor, Ettore Gotti-Tedeschi, was named by Pope Benedict XVI. as president of the oversight board. In May 2013 Gotti-Tedeschi resigned after a vote of no confidence by the IOR committe. The Italian State Attorney General was against him. The investigation proved to be groundless and was suspended. Gotti-Tedeschi spoke of an "intrigue" which was supposed to have brought about his fall.
A speaker for the Vatican Bank rejected any speculation about the resignation. Ernst von Freyberg , did not announce any future plans it said. It was said that Freyberg is supposed to have fulfilled his central mission, above all the establishment of transparency requirements and zero tolerance for money laundering and tax evasion.

The Last Pope-King -- Pope Bergolio’s “New Course” is Not Yet Deciphered

(Rome) "With Francis the papacy came into the shade. The light is all alone for him, the Pope. Not for the institution, but Sfor the person.” With these words, the Vatican expert Sandro Magister begins his recent article in the weekly magazine L'Espresso , the Italian Mirror for Double Saints last Sunday.
"From the Church canons he feels free. He feels himself free from the canonical norms. In just one year he has already suspended six times the ironclad rule that demands a new miracle before a blessed may be proclaimed a saint. John XXIII is the last of the six. Francis wanted at all costs that John Paul II should be canonized not on his own but balanced by another pope with a different profile, less combative, more merciful. "

Francis Wanted to Avoid the  Exclusive Canonization of John Paul II at all Costs

Last Sunday the double canonization was intended by Francis  because he ascended the Chair of Peter too late to slow down the canonization of John Paul II.  "The Congregation for the Causes of Saints, bent its knees his will and pretended it had asked Francis for an exception that was benevolnetly  granted immediately."
A simulated perversion of facts, which was accepted, thus, because the Pope demanded. "In addition Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, who still figures as president of the Italian episcopal conference, has asked Francis that it be he, the pope, who delivers the inaugural discourse to the plenary assembly of the bishops to be held in May, something no pontiff has ever done."

Francis Sets Will Through

At the Cardinal's request is what was said in the official press release, it  then came to the prompt readiness of the Holy Father, who announced to have harbored the same intention’. Really. For over a month we knew that Francis had already decided to make the speech.
Since he is pope, which is Italian Episcopal Conference solidifies and falls silent. Francis asked the Italian bishops that they notify him whether they want to continue to have the Pope as nominal president of the Bishops Conference or would like to choose these freely from their ranks, as in the other countries. In reality,  the Pope’s engagement  of the Italian Bishops' Conference is the living contradiction of the decentralization and “democratization” of the Church allegedly pursued by Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Francis Holds the Italian Episcopal Conference More Firmly Than Previous Popes

Pope Francis has the Italian Bishops Conference more  firmly in his grasp  than all the popes before him. The real authority in the bishops' conference is now its general secretary Bishop Nunzio Galatino Cassano all'Jonio. But the real authority behind this is Pope Francis, who raised Galatino into office and monitors each of his decisions.
The Galatino's first official act after his audience with Pope Francis was the dismissal of the former media officer of the Italian Bishops' Conference , Dino Boffo, who  had been hired by Cardinal Camillo Ruini. Boffo was chief editor of the daily newspaper of the Episcopal Conference "Avvenire" and for three years editor of TV2000, the television station of the bishops with a significantly increasing number of spectators. [Sorry, you’re too successful.?]

Media Work of the Bishops' Conference for Months without Leadership

That was on the 14th of February, so for more than two months. Since then, the entire communication channel of the Episcopal Conference was not controlled without giving word for  a reason for the dismissal of Boffo.
If on instead focuses attention within the Vatican walls, one finds there are still figures with full honors in the saddle that would have been sealed in every  other company long ago.

Advisor to the Pope and the Vatican Bank

These include the members of the Supervisory Board of the Vatican Bank IOR, in other words, the Gang of Four, which brutally sacked the then President of the Vatican Bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi  on 24 May 2012.
Not only that Pope Francis followed the advice of the four and ensured the continued existence of the Vatican Bank, although he had repeatedly indicated its dissolution in the previous months. The Pope leaves the Vatican Bank to work as the four want.
The new course of Pope Bergoglio is still not deciphered yet.

Scandalous Past of Msgr. Ricca is Confirmed

Edit: not long ago the usual professionals in various media were attacking Michael Voris for reporting the suggestion by a defrocked priest that there was an underground of deviants. Lots of crickets in that direction now, although Vatican Spokesman Father Lombardi has denied everything, there is independent confirmation that Sandro Magister's bombshell of recent days is true.

Vatican (Catholic news). Last night katholisches.info reported about an embarrassing incident. The history is as controversial as embarrassing, so many Vaticanistas do not quite know how to deal with it. It is about the past, the director of the Vatican's guest house, Monsignor Battista Ricca, Pope Francis has appointed him as his personal confidant to the house prelates of the Vatican Bank with full powers. The Vatican expert Sandro Magister revealed Riccas' aberrosexual past. Magister did the handle the Holy Father carefully beforehand with great restraint and respect to the information available to him. Thus, Msgr Ricca had earlier engaged in a relationship with a captain in the Swiss Guard. The Secretary-General of the Uruguayan Episcopal Conference has now confirmed the revelations of Vaticanista Sandro Magister. Riccas' way of life during his time in Montevideo was a "scandal". Even if the aberro-relationship was a few years ago, it would be unclear whether this reversal is also categorically joined by his homosexual lifestyle. When it was announced in June that the Vatican had a "gay lobby", the Holy Father said that he would see what "can be done." The almost simultaneous appointment of Ricca is therefore a mystery for many. The question remains open whether Pope Francis is a aware of a radical reversal of Ricca, which would be gratifying to believe, or whether the pontiff was linked by the gay lobby. Pope Appoints Archbishop Ricca to Prelate of Vatican Bank

Pope appoints "household head" of Sanctae Marthae to Prelate of the Vatican Bank

(Vatican) Pope Francis has appointed effective immediately, the Vatican diplomat Archbishop Mario Battista Salvatore Ricca (born 1956), on an interim basis, as the new Prelate of the Istituto per le Opere di Religione, or the Vatican bank IOR. The Italian Ricca is currently in a sense the chief house of Pope Francis as director of the Vatican guesthouse Domus Sanctae Marthae , where the Pope lives since his election. Monsignor Ricca also among the houses Domus Internationalis Paul VI , Domus Romana Sacerdotalis and the Casa San Benedetto , as Vatican Radio reported.

The predecessor in office of the Prelate of the Vatican Bank from 2006 to 2010 was the Vatican diplomat Archbishop Piero Pioppo. Monsignor Pioppo, now Titular Archbishop, has since been Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Tornielli Interviews Vatican Bank President Ettore Gotti Tedeschi

Editor: here's a quick google-translation with some correction. It looks like this is one of those attacks that Tornielli was talking about, being launched against the Pope.

"Since I assumed the presidency of the IOR I am busy with my all, according to information received by the Pope and the Secretary of State to make every transaction more transparent and in line with international anti-money laundering norms ...

I feel really humbled today. There is anger in words but also discouragement by Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, 65, Piacenza, a professor of "Ethical finance" at Catholic University, president of Santander Consumer Finance, a full year at the Institute for Works of Religion The Vatican Bank, and now it's under investigation for violation of money laundering. The man to whom Benedict XVI has given the renewal of the finances of the Holy See and admires the spirituality of Opus Dei, who when asked how many hours of his day are devoted to God and how much to money, replied: "One hundred per cent one and hundred percent the next. God is always present in everything I do.

"The newspaper has interviewed you.

What was your reaction to the news investigation on IOR and about her?

"Bitterness and humiliation. I do not know what else to say. Together with the Director of the Institute, Paul Cipriani, I am committed to tackling the problems which are now being investigated. We are working to enter the so-called White List, i.e. the list of countries that comply with international anti-money laundering and we hope to make it for December. I have an excellent relationship with the Bank of Italy and there is a continuous exchange of information ...».

Can you explain what happened with the Credito Artigiano and those 20 million directed to JP Morgan in Frankfurt?

"Meanwhile, we clarify that this is a remittance on IOR IOR: we simply transferred the money to invest in German bonds. Why were we not in compliance with the rules against money laundering?"

"We are implementing the rules, but possibly the survey was an error in the procedures implemented by the Credito Artigiano. But the operation is clear, there is nothing hidden or to hide: only a transfer of funds of the same IOR.

The State Secretariat has renewed total confidence ...

"I met Cardinal Bertone, and I found him very concerned about what happened. I was invited to stay at in my position, because I'm doing exactly what I was asked to do, that is more transparent operation of each IOR. This is the clear desire of my superiors and we consider what is happening ... almost unnatural! A procedural error is used as an excuse to attack the Institute, its president and, more generally, the Vatican. "

Why do you think someone wants to attack you or the Holy See?

"I think that the statement of the Secretary of State bodes well with this sense of astonishment. We had an end in sight just when we were working as hard as possible to enforce rules against money laundering. Cardinal Bertone has appointed Nicholas Attilio president of the supervisory board inside the Vatican that will monitor the implementation of all provisions for the White List. We are available to provide information, it would have been enough to call instead of banging on the front door. "

New Vatican Bank scandal threatens to erupt | National Catholic Reporter

What's especially interesting, as Paulo Rodari writes, L'Osservatore Romano has a page five book review of Cardinal Bertone and Gotti Tedeschi's book called “Denaro e Paradiso. I cattolici e l’economia globale”. (Money and Paradise. The Catholic and the Global Economy). This book is kind of reminiscent of another book written by a Benedictine Monk and the head of the Puma Company inGermany.

Here's the John Allen article for some of the details:

New Vatican Bank scandal threatens to erupt | National Catholic Reporter

Vatican Bank Under Investigation for Money Laundering

The Vatican Bank is under investigation for alleged involvement in a money-laundering scheme using accounts at one of Italy’s largest banks, according to a weekly investigative magazine.

Panorama reports that officials from the Bank of Italy’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) have identified transactions worth up to €180 million (£160 million) that allegedly violated anti-money-laundering regulations in accounts held at a UniCredit branch in Via della Conciliazione, next to St Peter’s Basilica. Prosecutors in Rome, led by Nello Rossi and Stefano Rocco Fava, are reported to be working with a special unit of the Guardia di Finanza, the Italian tax police, to investigate the bank — which is formally known as the Institute for Religious Works (IOR).

The investigation relates to alleged breaches of financial regulations and disclosure obligations at the branch, but it is possible that the investigation may be broadened to include accounts held at other Italian banks. Investigators are examining every transaction in accounts held by the IOR from 2006 to 2008, the magazine reported.

In that period, it said that more than €180 million in cheques and transfers moved through the accounts. The magazine named a manager at the branch who it claimed had a close relationship with Lelio Scaletti, a former director of the IOR, who left the Vatican Bank in October 2007. This is the most serious investigation of the Vatican Bank since the 1982 collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, in which it was the major shareholder. Ambrosiano collapsed with the Vatican held partly responsible for $1.3 billion in bad debts. If the latest allegations are proved to be correct, they would be a blow for the new directors of the IOR, appointed two months ago by Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State.

In September Angelo Caloia, president of the Vatican Bank, resigned after 20 years, with its five-member board of superintendents also replaced. The magazine claims the investigation was the leading item on the agenda when the Vatican Bank’s new board, now headed by Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, held its first meeting at the Vatican on October 27.

As investigators consider whether to interview senior officials from UniCredit, Vatican lawyers are understood to be considering whether to argue that the bank is outside Italian legal jurisdiction. In 2007 a Rome court said that the Mafia was behind the 1982 death of Roberto Calvi, the Banco Ambrosiano president known as “God’s banker”.
